My First Time Speaking English

After I completed my final exams, or SPM, I had a long three- or four-month wait for my results.

My dad noticed a job opening for a Malaysia Airlines air stewardess and encouraged me to “try my luck.”

I was nervous when I arrived for the interview.

I saw a long line of people already waiting for their turn.

In Malaysia, we learn English for 13 years, from kindergarten all the way through school.

But that interview was the first time I actually had to speak English.

Honestly, I was surprised, but I passed the first and second rounds and made it all the way to the final interview in Kuala Lumpur.

It was a long wait.

When it was my turn, I was in a room with about ten other people.

One by one, we had to introduce ourselves and read a sentence:

“Please fasten your seat belt.”

Unfortunately, I didn’t get the job.

They told me to try again next year because I was under the minimum age.

My parents were a bit disappointed.

But I was relieved because I really wanted to continue my studies.

That interview, however, was a crucial part of my journey.

It gave me the confidence to use English as a spoken language.

That experience helped me successfully get through my college interview for an executive secretaryship course.

What’s a time you surprised yourself by doing something you thought you couldn’t?

Stay kreatif,

Siti
