The Sketch That Started It All

I’m excited to share some of my never-before-seen childhood art.

As a little girl, I loved to draw and paint, and I was always fascinated by faces and people.

I’m so glad I brought my childhood drawings and a few paintings with me when I moved to the USA. 🇺🇸

I’ve managed to keep two paintings from my early years—one from fourth grade and the other from secondary school.

But something happened when I was 13, in my Form 2 class, that changed everything.

My classmate showed us a portrait drawing she had just finished for our substitute teacher.

I didn’t know what a portrait was, so I peeked at her drawing.

I thought to myself, “I can do that!”

I couldn’t wait to get home and try sketching one myself.

That afternoon, after finishing my homework, I grabbed a pencil, a sketchbook, and a magazine.

I sat in the backyard under our big mango tree.

I flipped through the magazine, and found a picture of Princess Diana.

I was so excited to have such a beautiful subject.

I sketched my very first pencil portrait, and here it is!

I’ve kept it and my other early sketches in great condition all these years.

This is the start of my love for portraiture.

But did I always get to draw portraits in my free time?

Well, I’ll continue the story in my next post.

Stay kreatif,

Siti
