You Don’t Need a Degree to be an Artist

After I completed my diploma, I decided to pick up my art again.

I was looking for business books that would teach fine artists how to start a business.

But, I couldn’t find a single one at the bookstores.

I took out my old class notes from my entrepreneurship course and used them as a guide to create a business plan for my portrait commissions.

Whenever I meet new people, I introduce myself as a portrait artist instead of my day job as a secretary.

I wanted to be known as an artist.

I had to learn how to balance my time.

I’d work on my art before I went to my day job, giving my full attention to my work.

When I came home, I would change hats and get back to my art.

I worked on portrait commissions on weekends while also studying part-time for my bachelor’s degree at night.

I would also visit art galleries on weekends to get inspiration for my artwork.

I’ve never taken a single art course in college.

But my years of experience, especially honing my skills in pastels, have made me a better artist.

I believe you don’t need a degree to be an artist.

Do you agree?

Stay kreatif,

Siti
