My first industrial training was a month and a half stint in the finance department at the Hyatt Regency in Kuala Lumpur.
That was my first real exposure to working in a hotel.
I remember looking at the sales, marketing, and public relations departments and being fascinated by all the activity.
I also loved that they provided food for the employees!
After I completed my diploma, my first job was in a hotel in Malacca, although I didn’t work directly for them.
I worked for a marketing company that managed their VIP membership program.
I loved the environment and worked there for quite some time before a brief job in a pharmaceutical company.
I eventually moved to another company in Kuala Lumpur that managed resorts across Malaysia.
I wasn’t working in a hotel, but in a corporate office, so I was still exposed to the industry, albeit indirectly.
What I really loved about working in the hotel and corporate environment was the professionalism—the dress code, how you handle people, and the day-to-day administration.
That experience helped me learn to manage my daily tasks with a new perspective.
I’m so thankful for my experiences in the hotel industry and the skills I gained through my education.
I’ve never stayed in a hotel here in the States, but I’ve noticed that homes and condos in Los Angeles are often built with a similar hotel-like concept.
I even apply those professional concepts to my own home.
What’s a valuable skill you’ve learned from a job that you now apply to your daily life?
