My journey began in 1996, when I bought my very first set of pastels. I didn’t have a formal mentor; instead, I learned the basics simply by observing the portrait artists at Central Market. That method of self-teaching worked for me.
However, after I left portraiture and started to draw still lifes and other subjects, I also stopped producing pastel paintings for almost a decade.
In 2018, I finally went back to painting with pastel, and it felt so good to reconnect with my main medium. Pastel is great because, unlike other mediums, it requires no drying time—you can admire it immediately after finishing it.
I truly love the freedom and immediacy that pastel offers.
