I like to observe and find beauty in everyday objects. This painting of a flower in a glass is an example of this.
Sometimes unplanned occasions result in the most beautiful of subjects. I had never painted glass with pastel before.
I always want to challenge myself with new subjects.
At the time, I had just started painting with pastel again and needed to find a good subject to paint for my new pastel painting collection. As I’d left pastel painting for years, I was worried that my skills were not that good right now and painting glass would be too difficult for me.
Portraiture is unquestionably the most challenging genre in painting. With over a decade of painting portraits, I know that no other subjects are as hard to paint as portraits.
At the time, I was fascinated with french yogurt that came in a glass jar. They looked so adorable so I collected them (I gave them a good wash and displayed them on my kitchen counter).
My youngest son plucked this lovely pink camellia from our yard and gave it to me as a surprise, as he always does.
Admiring the beauty, my focus turned to the glass jar on my computer riser.
I picked up the glass jar, went to the kitchen sink, and filled it up with water. I put the flower in the jar and turned the flower to find its pretty side. I brought the flower in the glass jar to my desk so I’d have a pretty flower to accompany me while working.
Then, I suddenly remembered to take pictures of this gorgeous looking flower as it was getting dark.
How could I pass up such a wonderful opportunity to record this beautiful moment? I took my camera and took several photos. Admiring the beauty of the flower, I decided to make a painting of it. I was really excited to paint this flower and experimented with painting glass with pastels for the first time!
Little blessings do come in small packages. I felt like I’d succeeded in painting glass with pastel. It wasn’t as difficult as I thought.
I love staring at this painting. From the petals and leaves of the flower to the glass jar it brings me inner peace, and I hope my painting will bring the same feelings to the collector who buys this painting.
